The School of Social Sciences (SOSS) offers academic programmes in eight disciplines: Anthropology, Economics, History, Library and Information Science, Political Science, Psychology, Public Administration, Sociology.

Programmes offered by the disciplines relate to core subject areas. At the same time they straddle other related disciplines making them truly interdisciplinary in nature. SOSS constantly strives to link the development of courses to the ever-expanding socio-economic and political contexts in which the social science processes take place.

The School has a research programme that applies newer methodologies to elicit a more creative response, both from the discipline’s own perspective and from an interdisciplinary perspective. In addition to degree programs, the School offers a large number of academic, professional and socially relevant programs of study leading to the award of degrees, diplomas and certificates at different levels..

SOSS also undertakes training programmes in the areas of concern to society with a social science perspective. The School is adding more optional courses in the existing Master’s and Bachelor’s Degree Programmes. These additions will enrich the programmes and make them compatible and meaningful in the light of new developments in the discipline areas. In view of its various need based programmes SOSS has succeeded over the years to have about 60% of the total enrolment of the University.

The School of Sciences started functioning, with the challenge of imparting good quality theoretical and practical education in four science disciplines, namely, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Life Sciences.

Historically, the degree was called animal husbandry and the animals studied were livestock species, like cattle, sheep, pigs, poultry, and horses. Today, courses available now look at a far broader area to include companion animals like dogs and cats, and many exotic species. Degrees in Animal Science are offered at a number of colleges and universities. Typically, the Animal Science curriculum not only provides a strong science background, but also hands-on experience working with animals on campus-based farms. The mission of the SOVET is to provide quality vocational education and training in accordance to the needs of the job market, to contribute employable skills among youth and adults, and to improve the growth of Indian economy. The School would achieve its mission through blended learning approach on the philosophy of open and distance learning. School will provide vertical and horizontal mobility opportunities for students which lead to development and opportunities in the world of work.

Our vision is to develop the school as an enabling space to foster interdisciplinary academic studies and research drawing upon theoretical, empirical and methodological resources cutting across disciplinary boundaries and to promote interactive academic co-existence amongst scholars of diverse specializations facilitating convergence of disciplines and transactional mutuality of holistic wisdom.

Our mission is to develop academic programmes and courses that addresses the complex dynamics of multi-faceted social issues and proceses. To strengthen the social extension aspect of research and facilitate issue based production of knowledge through incessant interaction with and participation of people.

The streams that have been identified to begin with the activities of the school include: Labour Studies, Diaspora Studies, Population Studies, Environmental Studies, Diversity and Inclusivity Studies, Studies of Marginalised Communities and Communities at Risk, Sustainability Studies and Food Security.

Due to the unique and innovative character of the School, SOITS will attempt to draw upon the existent expertise in other Schools of Study and Divisions and invite Adjunct Faculty to take up time bound assignments and engage in collaborative activities with SOITS for programme development. Similarly, SOITS faculty members may also collaborate with other Schools on similar terms, to strengthen research and studies of interdisciplinary and trans- disciplinary nature.

The School of Gender and Development Studies (SOGDS), aims at achieving gender justice and equity through developing and launching programmes in the areas of Gender and Development studies as well as Women’s and Gender studies. Through its academic programmes, the School promotes conceptual, analytical and critical understanding of gender issues in an effort to bring about affirmative social transformations. The School examines the existing gender gap and addresses the issue of gender disparity, with the objectives of strengthening individual and institutional efforts to bring about gender equity and social justice.

The activities of the School include:

• designing and developing academic programmes and courses at research, post graduate, undergraduate and awareness levels;
• conducting research and developing appropriate research methodology; and
• formulating and implementing training programmes

Programmes are currently offered under two broad streams: Gender and Development Studies and Women’s and Gender Studies. Other focal areas within these broad streams include Women’s Studies, Literature, Culture, Law, Science and Agriculture among others.

There had been a long felt need to develop the programmes of co-scholastic nature hence the School of Performing and Visual Arts was established.

The School of Performing and Visual Arts is functional with a vision to provide higher education opportunities in the Performing and Visual Arts through open & distance learning mode of education. Within the above context, the School of Performing and Visual Arts is visualized as a location that intents to implement a new vision of art pedagogy and practices. It aims at being constituted by the principle of creative expression, processes, practices and disciplines, including historical, theoretical and critical engagements. The idea is to focus on areas of knowledge and professional specializations and is imagined as a breeding ground for the development of classical and newer art practices and theoretical insights in the direction of finding paradigms in performing and visual art forms with greater amalgamation between theory, practice and research on one hand, and interdisciplinary approach between various arts on the other.

The present philosophy of all-round development of knowledge in Visual and Performing Art education have not been able to carve out a distinguish place of their own. The need of the hour is that the creative expressions should get importance at par with theoretical and practical dimensions of the discipline with integration at under graduate and post graduate level, and more than that, possibilities of research, leading to many programs to be explored through ODL.

While keeping in view the possible inclusion of a larger or the total range of artistic medium and forms within the School of Performing and Visual Arts curriculum, it had been envisaged that the School would primarily organize itself around two major streams of artistic practice; performing arts and visual arts, with further allied specializations. These are:

• Visual – Drawing, Painting, Applied Art, Sculpture, Visual Communication and Design etc.

The course structures of each of the streams and specializations would be designed keeping in view the composite and generic focus of the School, which would facilitate conceptual commonalities to interactively and creatively coexist between the various disciplines and streams of specialization.
